They referred to Paul McCartney as the "cute Beatle". I guess in the 80's, the female equivalent would be the Go-Go's' Jane Wiedlin, who was clearly the cutest of the five women in the band, and, to my knowledge, the only other one besides lead singer Belinda Carlisle to release a solo record.
In 1988, Jane played up the playful girl-next-door imagery by scuba diving and swimming with dolphins in her video for "Rush Hour", the first single from her sophomore CD, "Fur". Unfortunately, after releasing one more solo disc two years later, she wasn't heard from again until 1) the band reunited and 2) she was cast in a Scooby-Doo DTV (she was one of the voices of the goth band, the Hex Girls).
Anyway, this will make you feel like you're at the beach. Here's "Rush Hour":
I always loved the Go-Gos and I admit liking Jane - she was like a New Wave pixie!
ReplyDeleteI bought her solo albums - although I prefer the first one ("Blue Kiss") over "Fur".
She also tried to jumpstart an acting career - she appeared in small roles (blink and you'll miss'em) in the late 80s. She was the singing telegram girl in "Clue", Played Joan of Arc in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure", and a small role in Star Trek III as a Star Fleet pilot. Having her as a Hex Girl just added to the fun!
The other Go-Gos (that weren't Belinda Carlisle) did fairly well for themselves when not on reunion tours. All have released albums with new bands they fronted and have written songs for many artists over the years.
I knew she was in one of the Trek movies. I saw "Clue", and, yeah, I didn't realize she was in it.
ReplyDeleteNow, let's see if she gets called back for another Hex Girls project---one that preferably won't be sold to Cartoon Network!
