The Carpenters scored a modest Top 40 hit in the winter of 1976-77 with "All You Get From Love is a Love Song", which some folks might mistakenly refer to as "Dirty Old Shame", which starts the chorus.
Karen Carpenter left us too soon. Period.
I like some of The Carpenters work, though some of their covers of 50s and 60s tunes sounded rather bland (think, "Mr. Postman").
ReplyDeleteI had a co-worker who claimed to have been a long time friend of Karen's. They'd been friends since the Carpenter Family moved to California. They were so close in fact that the friend had asked her to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. She accepted, but as the wedding day drew near, the Carpenters were scheduled to leave for their first tour, so she had to gracefully bow out.
I had asked her why Karen struggled with her weight for so many years. I had always thought she looked thin enough as it was. She told me it had to do with their first TV appearance; she was told the camera added 15 pounds so she needed to lose 20. It was the beginning of an anorexic nightmare that ultimately killed her. A shame really.
Oh, man. That is sad.
