Musical Interlude: Boil Them Cabbage Down (1964)

From season 4 of The Andy Griffith Show:

The Darling family (Denver Pyle, Maggie Peterson, & the Dillard brothers) are back, along with Charlene's husband, Dud (Bob Denver, who took over the role from Hoke Howell). This clip, I believe, closes the show, as we're hearing "Boil Them Cabbage Down". As usual, Andy sits in on guitar, and this time, sings, along with Charlene & Dud. Dud, Andy, & Barney (Don Knotts) take turns doing some do-si-do with Charlene.

I don't think Bob ever sang on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis or Gilligan's Island, but he did in a movie (and we've already got "Ho Daddy"). The Dillards did release three albums including the songs they performed on the show.

  1. A small point, but it's come up in other places:

After its first season, Bob Denver's first series was simply called Dobie Gillis - which is what its viewers always called it anyway.

The producers made a few other modifications at this time, such as allowing Dwayne Hickman to stop bleaching his hair blonde, going back to medium brown.

Next time the reruns come around, see for yourself: from Season 2 onward, the main title just says Dobie Gillis.

  2. I'm aware of that, but resources also list it by the full title. I think the name change was for the reasons you cited, that viewers only referred to it by just the lead character.
