Classic TV: Was Sherlock Holmes actually real? (In Search Of..., 1978)

From season 3 of the original In Search Of.......:

Series host Leonard Nimoy looks at the belief that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes, was based on a real person or persons. The episode also includes a brief bio of Doyle's own life.

Whomever is in charge of Wikipedia needs to correct one fact in the series history. The original series was syndicated, not a network program.

Rating: A.

  1. An odd premise for a "paranormal investigation" show, but nonetheless a rare showcase of positive fandom which the downright tribal Marvel and DC communities ought to take notes from. The Sherlock Holmes Society of London used to have an actual address for "fan mail" to Holmes & Watson, but given how many decades would have passed for both men's natural lifetimes, I don't suppose it's still active. One of the better "they're sorta real" efforts I enjoyed was connected to BBC/PBS Masterpiece's "Sherlock," in which Watson maintained a therapy journal. Many entries contained his perspective on cases solved on the show, and even brief updates regarding the aftermath of various suspects and whatnot. Nothing terribly revolutionary, but it was dutifully maintained for four wonderful seasons, an effort I applauded.
