It has been 8 days since Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was shot & killed by a lone sniper while Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University. The funeral has since taken place, but, unfortunately, the GOP isn't letting Kirk rest in peace.
Earlier this week, ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel speculated, perhaps in jest, that alleged shooter Tyler Robinson, who was formally charged on Tuesday, and is a registered Republican, might've been a part of the MAGA movement that the movement wants to distance itself from, instead pushing their usual agenda against the so-called "radical left".
Kimmel, as per normal, ripped into president Trump, FBI Director Kash Patel, and VP JD Vance Monday & Tuesday. Meanwhile, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr went on a podcast and on Fox News, whining about Kimmel.
The Nexstar Broadcast Group, which counts WTEN among its holdings, announced Wednesday that they were pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live! off their stations. Sinclair Broadcasting said they would do the same. That left ABC/Disney with no choice but to bench Kimmel "indefinitely". The suits at Nexstar & Sinclair both were fearing the revocation of their licenses, which Trump has in the past demanded of ABC, CBS, et al, for negative reporting. In reality, the FCC can't do that to networks. Affiliates? Maybe, but it's still an overreach. Carr is out of bounds, and so, really, is the GOP for using Kirk's death as a cudgel to continue their bullying of media outlets.
These are the times we live in. It shouldn't have to be this way, and Charlie Kirk should be allowed to rest in peace, four days after his funeral. His own party won't let him, and that's on them.
