Oldies channels are loading up on The Carpenters this weekend, and with good reason. Richard & Karen Carpenter produced some of the best soft rock on AM radio in the 70's. 1971's "For All we Know" still gets airplay 50 years later, which is a testament to the talent of the siblings.

"For All We Know" is from the score of the movie Lovers And Other Strangers, which was a middle-major hit of its year.
It's been said that you couldn't have a wedding in the '70s without this being the first dance.
"For All We Know" was nominated for the Oscar as Best Song that year, which touched off a small storm because the Carpenters weren't allowed to perform it on the Oscar show (Karen and Richard weren't "movie people"; Petula Clark got the gig).
Anyway, "For All We Know" won, and the composers (whose names I can't call to mind just now) made damn sure to credit Karen and Richard for making the song - and the movie, comes to that - into hits.
The first wedding I attended was in 1972 when my aunt remarried. My folks & I traveled to Catskill for the wedding in the company of other kin. To my recollection, they didn't play "For All we Know". And what did award show organizers know back then, anyway? Wimps.
