Four years after Wayne Rogers had left M*A*S*H, with Trapper John having been written off (Rogers bombed with City of Angels for ratings challenged NBC), the beloved character returned now older, wiser, and part of the system he'd rebelled against years earlier.
Pernell Roberts (ex-Bonanza) was cast as Trapper John, MD in his return to series television. Roberts had spent the post-Bonanza years as a reliable character actor, but felt the time was right to try the grind of a weekly gig again. As with the other series, Trapper John was, at its core, an ensemble drama that ran for 7 seasons, the same amount of time as earlier medical dramas, Medical Center & Marcus Welby, MD.
After a cable run on FX in its formative years, Trapper John hasn't been seen anywhere in years. A Roberts fan channel edited off the credits for the opener, with special guest Roddy McDowell.
