Rockin' Funnies: Stand Back (1987)

Sometimes, Vince McMahon just can't help himself.

In 1987, the Slammy Awards had been moved from the spring to right before Christmas, to coincide with the release of "Piledriver: The Wrestling Album II", a sequel few actually wanted. No, seriously. While there were actually some good tunes on the album, although Robbie Dupree's attempt at a comeback flamed out with the cheesy "Girls in Cars", McMahon had to take home the prize for the campiest performance ever.

He had Hulk Hogan pull his bass guitar out of mothballs, then had wrestlers Jake Roberts, Brutus Beefcake, Junkyard Dog, B. Brian Blair, Jim Brunzell, and the late "Macho Man" Randy Savage pretend to play instruments as a backing band. McMahon came out trying to be a poor man's Tom Jones, but came off as Jones crossed with Adam West doing a cabaret act. Problem is, well, Jesse Ventura hit the right note in his intro. McMahon couldn't sing a lick.

"Stand Back" is not to be confused with the Stevie Nicks hit of the same name that came out four years earlier.

Of course, 20 years later, it became fodder for mocking McMahon. For the record, as we've documented, at least Adam West could actually carry a tune.........
