Origin of a Classic: The pilot movie for Cagney & Lacey (1981)

This is where it all began, in October 1981.

CBS had bought Cagney & Lacey, the last project from Filmways, which would be absorbed by Orion about a year or two into the series run.

2nd generation actress Tyne Daly and M*A*S*H co-star Loretta Swit were the leads in the pilot. As we documented when reviewing the series many moons ago, when the series began, Meg Foster was cast as Christine Cagney, but after a quick cancellation that was reversed, Sharon Gless moved over from House Calls to assume the role of Cagney. The fan support for the series helped it survive two cancellations, but not a 3rd.

Now, let's go back to the beginning.

In memory of Loretta Swit, who passed away earlier this week. No rating out of respect.
