What Might've Been: One of The Boys (1982)

Saul Turtletaub & Bernie Orenstein hadn't had a hit series since ABC's What's Happening! left the air. The former writers & producers for Sanford & Son returned to NBC with 1982's One of The Boys, a generational comedy matching up film legend Mickey Rooney, in his first series since the 60's, with then-up & comers Dana Carvey & Nathan Lane, with Scatman Crothers (ex-Chico & The Man) along for the ride.

The plot: Rooney's character leaves a retirement home, and winds up in a college dorm. Chaos ensues.

Let's take a look at a sample episode.

This would be Rooney's last go-round in primetime. We all know how Lane & Carvey's careers have progressed since. Dana became an icon on Saturday Night Live. Lane was more successful in movies & on Broadway, like Rooney. Crothers was also involved in the short-lived animated series, Jokebook, also for NBC (sang the theme song), and found success in movies at the end of his career ("Cocoon", "The Twilight Zone Movie").

No rating. It premiered on a Saturday, which was bowling night.
