Musical Interlude: All I Have To Do Is Dream (1972)

This could've been the last hit record for the late Bobby Darin, but, alas, it wasn't released as a single.

In 1972, Darin had his own variety show, The Bobby Darin Amusement Company, airing on NBC as a summer replacement for Dean Martin, which gave the versatile Darin the opportunity to not only sing, but demonstrate his acting skills in comedy skits.

In this clip, he teams with Petula Clark for a cover of the Everly Brothers' "All I Have To Do Is Dream", which had been covered by Glen Campbell & Bobbie Gentry, and later by actress Victoria Principal, of all people, and Andy Gibb.

In doing research, I checked the discography on Darin, and that's how I know this version of "Dream" wasn't released as a single. Ms. Clark had also stopped reaching the Top 40 by this point as well. But, ah, don't they make such a cute couple?

It's a beautiful song but the Everly Brothers' version is the best I've ever heard IMO. However, This version is OK too.

The song was also sung in the 1980s film, "Starman" by Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. In the film, Bridges plays an alien who took the form of Allen's late husband (using DNA from a lock of hair she kept). While he's morphing into human form, she is watching a home movie of her and her late husband singing the song. It's rather brief in the film, but MTV played the entire home movie segment as a music video during the movie's run to promote the soundtrack.

I liked Bobby Darin and it's a shame he died so soon. I had read somewhere that he knew most of his life was a crap shoot due to a heart ailment. He lived everyday of his life thinking that day was likely his last!

I wonder if that was Bridges' on-screen singing debut, considering he won an Oscar a few years back for playing a country singer (and has released a CD since then).
