High school this 'n' that

Spent part of Monday afternoon at Knickerbocker Park for the LaSalle-Catholic Central baseball game. No press present, which is never good. There is a scoreboard at the park, but CCHS doesn't have volunteers who can operate it, which means if you're late arriving, as I've been twice in the last week, you have to fish around to find out the score and the inning. Where's the school spirit?

As it was, LaSalle did their best impersonation of the Gas House Gorillas ("Baseball Bugs", way back in the day), as the Crusaders' defense took another off day. I left after the 4th inning, with LaSalle up big, 20-3. The Crusaders could only manage 3 more after I left, so the final was 20-6. Felt like a football score in early May, didn't it?

Meanwhile, Albany Academy has gotten right back on course after seeing a 12 game overall winning streak end at Ichabod Crane on Friday. After beating Cohoes, 6-1, on Saturday, the Cadets blew out Watervliet, 19-0, on Monday. Now 13-1 in the Colonial Council (14-2 overall), it does seem as though the Cadets could make a run back to the Class B title game at Bruno Stadium in 2 weeks.

Back at Troy High, the softball team's three game winning streak was snapped at Guilderland on Monday, 1-0. Let's give the ladies credit for not giving up, and making a case for possibly getting past the first round of sectionals next week. Unfortunately, the baseball team's losing streak is now at 9 games after getting thumped by the Dutchmen, 13-5. Tonight, it'll be the lacrosse team's road finale at Guilderland, as the laxmen play their last two at home.

Congratulations to Ichabod Crane's Calista Phippen, who twirled a perfect game Monday as the Lady Riders defeated Cohoes, 1-0. Insofar as I know, this would be the 2nd no-hitter in Section 2 this season (Albany Academy's Ben Seiler has the other, which the Riders avenged on Friday).

I spoke before about the sectionals kicking off next week. The regular season ends for baseball, softball, & lacrosse on May 15, and, to be honest, I don't like Troy's chances. If the baseball or lacrosse teams don't end their losing streaks, they'll be one and done for sure. Sectionals will start either the 17th or 18th, and there will be no rest for the already weary, with the sectional title games in baseball on course for Bruno Stadium May 22-25.
