Video Valentine: The Things We Do For Love (1976)

 With Valentine's Day two weeks away, let's get the ball rolling with 10cc & "The Things We Do For Love":

Video Valentine: You Can't Hurry Love (1982)

 Phil Collins covered the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" for his 1982 album, "Hello, I Must Be Going!", said title taken from a line attributed to comedy legend Groucho Marx.

Collins lets his ham out as he has multiple images of himself in this clip, something he'd done with 1980's "I Missed Again", and would revisit one final time with "Two Hearts", off the "Buster" soundtrack, a few years after this video.

Video Valentine: Will You Still Love Me? (1986)

 By the mid-80's, Peter Cetera had left Chicago, and was enjoying success as a solo act. Meanwhile, Chicago forged ahead with new bassist-vocalist Jason Scheff, and peaked at #3 with "Will You Still Love Me?".

Video Valentine: Stop! In The Name of Love (1965)

 "Stop! In The Name of Love" is getting plenty of airplay on oldies channels this week, and why not? It's Valentine's Week. Here's Diana Ross & The Supremes with their original version, from Shindig.

The Hollies, in the course of making a comeback in the 80's, recorded a cover version that got some airplay on MTV.

Video Valentine: (Just Like) Romeo & Juliet (1964)

 The Reflections scored in 1964 with "(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet", which, I think, might've been their only hit.

More than a decade later, Sha Na Na covered "Romeo & Juliet" with Johnny Contardo on vocals, which may have surpassed the original.

Video Valentine: Always Something There to Remind Me (1983)

 England's Naked Eyes burst on the scene in 1983, garnering heavy airplay on MTV with their cover of "Always Something There to Remind Me", a Burt Bacharach-Hal David composition that had first been a hit for Dionne Warwick some years earlier.

Rob Fisher later became 1/2 of Climie Fisher, which wasn't quite as successful. Pete Byrne reformed Naked Eyes nearly 20 years ago, and the current iteration is usually on the nostalgia circuit.

Video Valentine: What The World Needs Now (is Love) (1965)

 Our final Video Valentine of the year is one that carries a global message.

Jackie DeShannon's "What The World Needs Now" has a message that still resonates today, amidst all the hate and rhetoric in this country and elsewhere.

Video Valentine: Lady (You Bring Me Up) (1981)

 The Commodores burned up radio airwaves in the summer of 1981 with the peppy "Lady (You Bring Me Up). The video features Lionel Richie and the guys playing soccer with a group of women......

The band would follow up with the romantic ballad, "Oh, No", which was Richie's coda to his time with the Commodores before releasing his solo debut, "Can't Slow Down", two years later.

Video Valentine: Tonight, I Celebrate My Love (1983)

"Tonight, I Celebrate My Love" put Peabo Bryson on the Top 40 map in 1983. The duet with Roberta Flack soared up the charts, peaking at #16 on the Hot 100 and #4 on the Adult Contemporary chart. You can bet there'll be calls to oldies channels for this one over the next few days.....

Video Valentine: Nice to be With You (1972)

 Gallery peaked at #4 on the Hot 100, #5 on the Adult Contemporary, and topped Cashbox's pop chart with 1972's one-hit wonder, "Nice to be With You".

The clip is taken from VH1's My Generation (1st series).

I actually bought a 2nd-hand (maybe 10th hand?) copy of the LP years later, before eventually sending it on its way. This will still get played on oldies channels.

Video Valentine: Angelia (1989)

 With Valentine's Day a shade over 2 weeks away, let's start with this year's Video Valentines. Leading off is Richard Marx with "Angelia", from 1989's "Repeat Offender" CD.

This was the age where soft ballads like this routinely were also aimed at the Adult Contemporary (formerly Easy Listening) chart in addition to the Top 40. Expect this to get a ton of airplay over the next two weeks.

Musical Interlude: No More Words (1984)

 Berlin followed up "The Metro" with 1984's "No More Words", a Depression-era set video which uses Bonnie & Clyde as inspiration.

It would take two more years for Berlin to score their biggest hit ("Take My Breath Away"). Meanwhile, 20 years later, Travis Tritt scored a huge country hit with "Modern Day Bonnie & Clyde", with Billy Bob Thornton starring in the video.

Video Valentine: Love is in The Air (1978)

 Australia's John Paul Young isn't related to the Young brothers of AC/DC fame, though Malcolm & Angus' older brother, George, produced John Paul's lone American hit, "Love is in The Air", released in 1978.

Video Valentine: Kiss Me (1998)

 Sixpence None The Richer broke onto the Hot 100 in 1998-99 with "Kiss Me", the 1st single off their self-titled 3rd CD, peaking at #2 in May 1999. The track was used in the movie, "She's All That", and on the TV series, Dawson's Creek.

Video Valentine: I'll Never Fall in Love Again (1999)

 After making a cameo appearance with Burt Bacharach in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me", Elvis Costello is at Woodstock to do a cover of one of Bacharach & Hal David's classic ballads, "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", getting in a plug for "Shagged" as he goes.

In memory of Bacharach, 94, who passed away on Wednesday.

Video Valentine: Earth Angel (1970)

 Now, this is performance art.

Tiny Tim will forever be remembered for "Tiptoe Through The Tulips", but in an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in January 1970, Tim decided to try to change things up by changing his vocal style for a cover of the Penguins' 1955 hit, "Earth Angel", backed by the all-female group, Enchanted Forest. He reverts to his familiar falsetto about halfway, and his breakdown is just funny. Even Sullivan's digging.

Video Valentine: Keep on Loving You (1980)

 I was a senior in high school when REO Speedwagon released what would be their signature album, 'Hi-Infidelity", at the end of 1980. The first single, "Keep on Loving You", raced all the way to #1 on the Hot 100 as the calendar shifted to 1981.

The following video debuted on MTV's opening day in August of '81, but subsequently, the network began using a concert clip instead when the channel arrived in the home town in February 1982.

Musical Interlude: What You Won't Do For Love (1978)

 Singer-songwriter Bobby Caldwell made his first inroads on the charts in 1978 with "What You Won't Do For Love". Some of you might remember when it was used in an ad campaign for Mitsubishi back in 2013. In between, Caldwell re-recorded "Love", and it's been covered by a number of artists as diverse as Roy Ayers and Elliot Yamin.

Video Valentine: It Only Takes a Minute (1975)

 "It Only Takes a Minute" may be Tavares' best known song, released in 1975, but it still resonates with couples today.
