Advertising For Dummies: Who is DirecTV fooling? (2014)

DirecTV's latest, lamest ad campaign, touting the supposed virtues of satellite TV being wireless, instead posits kids and wives/girlfriends as being played by marionettes.

Case in point:

Ironically, GEICO is using a wireless Pinocchio (actually a guy in a costume) in their current ad campaign, which is just as lame. Who's writing these ads, anyway?

I hate these ads! Surely they are written by people whose drugs are heavily laced with PCP!

It makes no sense for these people to be involved with marionettes! At least the Pinoccio as lousy motivational speaker was sort of funny and had relevance.

It's getting to the point that I need to reach for the brain bleach whenever I turn on the TV!

I don't think the drugs have anything to do with it. In reality, they write according to the perception that today's average viewer has a short attention span, a mythic stereotype that has been with us for more than 30 years.

Unfortunately, the writers took Weird Al's advice, daring to be stupid.
