On The Air: The Cool Kids (2018)

Back in the day, Fox promoted themselves as having "Attitude" in their programming. How, then, to explain The Cool Kids, which has the look of something that belonged on either CBS or NBC back in the 80's?

From the mind of Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) comes a collection of retirees who still have the sense of adventure, attitude, and rebellion of their juvenile years. That it has the resurrected Last Man Standing as a lead-in won't mean much in the long term.

The Cool Kids serves as a Fox homecoming for David Alan Grier (ex-In Living Color, most recently in NBC's The Carmichael Show), whose character, Hank, is the leader of a motley crew who've recently lost one of their close friends. Enter Margaret (Vicki Lawrence, ex-Mama's Family, The Carol Burnett Show), who plugs herself into the void created by the recent passing.

Rounding out the crew are Leslie Jordan (ex-Will & Grace) and venerable veteran Martin Mull, whose lengthy resume includes Roseanne, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, & Fernwood 2-Night. Only Lawrence has been around longer than Mull has.

Imagine if Fred Sanford had moved into a retirement home, still trying to get rich quick, and ran into Thelma Harper. That's what Day was hoping for, with Grier subbing for the late Redd Foxx opposite Lawrence. However, Lawrence is looking to put Thelma behind her, aside from a recent one-woman stage show where she brought Thelma on the road as part of the show. As Margaret, she's believable as the new kid on the block, hoping to fit in. We've all been there in our younger days.

Let's look at the trailer:

Mull's last sitcom for Fox, Dads, was a one year wonder. This will be, too.

Rating: C.
