A little of this and a little of that

We have to start with some sad news coming from the NFL.

Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, who led the Miami Dolphins to a perfect season in 1972, culminating in a Super Bowl title, passed away over the weekend at 90.

Shula had also led the then-Baltimore Colts into Super Bowl III, only to fall to the Jets in one of the biggest upsets in football history. Not long after, the Colts & Jets would be division rivals for a number of years as memory serves, before the conferences were realigned.

In post-retirement years, Shula was a critic of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and the questionable tactics used by the Patriot organization in an attempt to duplicate the Dolphins' success 35 years later, only to be thwarted by the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Shula's passing was the hot topic on morning sports shows on FS1 & ESPN, obviously, and will remain the lead story for the rest of the day.

Rest in peace, Don.

Even after a weekend respite at Camp David, President Donald Trump was his usual self in a "town hall" broadcast Sunday night at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, and shown on---where else?---Fox News Channel.

By usual, of course, we mean he served up more lies and fallacies than Pinocchio ever could, even in those lame GEICO commercials.

Trump also took the time to take umbrage at a fellow Republican-----George W. Bush.

While Bush called for unity in the face of COVID-19, Trump continues to play the blame game, claiming his immediate predecessor, Barack Obama, had something to do with the pandemic (he didn't), and ragged on Bush for no reason other than the fact he felt the need.

MSNBC on Twitter: "“This is the return of Trump the man baby,” Rep ...

Jealous much, Mr. President?

Now, Bush wasn't exactly a popular President in some circles, either, but he has some things that Trump doesn't. Dignity. Humility. Respect. Trump's bizarre obsession with degrading Obama and his accomplishments has more to do with the voter base of closet bigots than reality.

Like, I get it. There are sections of this country that didn't like the fact an African-American was elected President 12 years ago, and those people can't get over it. Trump won't let them, because he's not going to get over it, either. The media dwells on all the lies and misrememberings, ignoring positive moves, such as moving the capital of Israel to Jerusalem.

Trump has another obsession, that with Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough over a murder case from nearly 20 years ago that Trump claims Scarborough was responsible for, but has no evidence to support his claims.

I only see one future for Trump post-White House, and it has to do with four padded walls......

One GOP "strategist", whom I won't name, decided to be an idiot and suggested the Democrats might be desperate enough to put together an emergency ticket in the event that Joe Biden is forced to step aside due to the baggage he has (age, sexual misconduct charges, etc.).

The ticket? Swillary Clinton for President, with Obama as Vice President. This so-called strategist acknowledged that Obama isn't likely to be on a ticket any time soon since he's already had two terms as President (2009-16), but thinks the Democrats will ignore common sense, just like Trump, and take a chance.

Unfortunately, Swillary still has some considerable baggage of her own that cost her the election four years ago, so consider this idea for what it is, a pipe dream.

As we alluded to over at Tri-City SportsBeat the other day, the other shoe fell for schools in New York on Friday when Governor Cuomo decided that with about six weeks left in the school year, schools would remain closed, and virtual learning would continue. This was to be expected, actually. It also means graduation exercises next month could conceivably be virtual, but there will not be senior & junior proms. In that context, parents can breathe a sigh of relief as they can save money on renting tuxedos for their sons, limos, and dresses & corsages for their daughters. That money can be used in other areas, such as keeping essential items like disinfectants, toilet paper, food, et al in stock at home.

As long as we don't have any hoarders in the 518, we're good.
