Sports this 'n' that

Five days after defeating San Antonio for their first NBA title since 1973, the Knicks had the attention of all of NYC this morning.

The victory parade down the legendary Canyon of Heroes culminated at City Hall, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke at great length, praising the team. Owner James Dolan has already decided that the Knicks will be the first NBA champions to visit president Trump at the White House, since Dolan & Trump are long time friends and have similar social attitudes, as witnessed by Dolan's long standing feud with former Knick star Charles Oakley, dating back nearly a decade, and, well, we know about Trump's childish, daily tantrums.

Trump is in France for the G7 Summit, and missed the parade.

The Knicks have already worked out a deal with the WWE in relation to Danhausen, who was a good luck charm for the team during their post-season run. Comparisons to the Mets' magical run 2 summers ago after a promotional appearance by Grimace can be dismissed, since Danhausen got the Knicks "to the finish line".

Speaking of WWE, there are no plans to hold a PLE at the White House, unlike the UFC spectacular four nights ago. UFC frontman & Ram pitchman Dana White has already shot down plans for a second card at the White House, and has to deal with the backlash of one of his fighters taking a cheap shot at former First Lady Michelle Obama. Right wing morons are overestimating the crowd size for Sunday's card. Par for the course for chronic liar Trump and his supporters.

Belated congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes on winning the Stanley Cup on Sunday, besting Vegas in 6 games. We referenced this over at Tri-City SportsBeat on Monday.

It must've been guys night out for WWE's Paul "Triple H" Levesque, Roman Reigns, & Nick Khan at the UFC card on Sunday. Levesque's brother-in-law, Shane McMahon, was also in the house, as he's probably the biggest MMA fan in the family.

More examples of GOP stupidity

To the surprise of, well, no one, former Attorney General Pam "Dumb" Bondi pleaded the 5th when testifying before Congress on Friday, refusing to answer any questions about the Epstein files, and other controversies.

Current acting AG Todd "Bleached" Blanche sent some lawyers over to ensure that Bondi didn't spill any tea, let's put it that way. It tells us that the GOP is that scared the truth will come out.

Just hold both of them for contempt, and see what happens.

A Federal judge ruled Friday that president Trump cannot have his name added to the Kennedy Center, after all. What Donnie Diapers did last year, the judge ruled, was illegal.

Of course, there was this:

"WAAAHHHH! I do what I want! You don't tell me what to do! WAAAAHHHHHH!!"

Donnie Diapers' jealousy of the Democrats is on full display. And so is his ego.

Treasury Secretary Scott "Full" Bessent is the idiot responsible for the plan to introduce a $250 bill with Trump's face on it. Look for that to be struck down as well, since sitting presidents aren't supposed to have this while in office.

And, then, there is the Freedom 250 concert series, scheduled for the National Mall in Washington from June 25-July 10. Some of the artists announced for the series earlier in the week have already withdrawn, claiming that they were misled by the claim that the concerts were supposed to unite the country. Not with Trump involved. Cheeto Narcissus likely will show up to gum up the works. In the last two days, the following have dropped out:

Bret Michaels (Poison).

Martina McBride.

The Commodores, who haven't had a hit record in 41 years ("Night Shift", 1985, their only post Lionel Richie hit).

Young MC.

Morris Day & The Time, best known for their association with Prince in the 80's, and hits like "Jungle Love".

As of now, Flo Rida & Fabrice Morvan (Milli Vanilli) are still scheduled. There are conflicting reports regarding another 90's act, the C & C Music Factory, now under the direction of Freedom Williams, who's not exactly a Trump fan himself.

Yahoo! commenters are having a field day as Trump sycophants are trying to spin their way out of this debacle, asking if has-beens like Kid Rock will be added. Some asked about Roseanne Barr & Scott Baio.

Apparently, the committee reps that met with the agents for the artists didn't tell them everything, and that further research exposed the truth.

Prediction: Trump's talent challenged daughter-in-law, Lara, and unfunny comic Tony Hinchcliffe will fill the vacant spots, or the entire event gets cancelled.

Update, 4:58 pm (ET): Trump himself has announced he will appear as a headline act. Watch the house vacate.

Speaking of Lara, it seems she blew up a myth about Dumb Donald. Standing side-by-side with the president exposes the fact that he's not as tall as he claims to be. Well, DUH!!!!! We do start to lose height as we get older. I'll guess he's not 215 pounds, either, but more like 315.

Finally, Trump, a WWE Hall of Famer for hosting two Wrestlemania events in Atlantic City in the late 80's, participating in a 3rd, and being a friend of the McMahon family, bought stock in TKO, WWE's parent company, ahead of the UFC card scheduled for his birthday, June 14. Gee, what a surprise, or, in the words of Thanos in an Avengers movie, "this is inevitable". It sure is.

Sports this 'n' that

By the end of business on Sunday, we will know how this year's NFL playoffs will break down.

Having already been eliminated from the postseason picture, the Atlanta Falcons played spoiler on Monday, defeating the Los Angeles Rams, 27-24, which sets up the top two teams in the NFC West, San Francisco & Seattle, for a division title showdown Saturday (ABC, ESPN, 8 pm). The Rams already have a wild card in hand, but were eliminated from division title contention after the Niners & Seahawks both won on Sunday.

Over in the AFC, the New England Patriots clinched their first AFC East title in 6 years after blowing out the Jests, then watching Philadelphia beat Buffalo. Denver can clinch the West, depending on what happens next weekend, as they still have the Los Angeles Chargers hard on their collective heels.

Nine days after defeating YouTube clout chaser Jake Paul, Anthony Joshua was in an auto accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two friends. Joshua is in the hospital as we write, and we are sending prayers his way.

In stark contrast, UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell must've overdosed on stupid pills, because in an interview he gave, he claimed that Joshua should've let Paul win the fight.

Yeah, right, and pigs will fly.

File photo courtesy Yahoo!.

Mitchell also said what some might think is the quiet part out loud, that Jake & Logan Paul have fixed their fights. With Logan now in WWE, as an arrogant jackass, he hasn't laced on the gloves in a while, but we have to wonder if Mitchell is on crack or something to say stupid things like this. He himself has not had a fight since the summer, so he's looking for attention.

UFC to leave ESPN for CBS/Paramount Plus. The promotion's broadcast history is about to come full circle

Some 20-odd years ago, UFC launched The Ultimate Fighter, a reality competition series that was designed to help bolster the promotion's roster of fighters. The series initially aired on Spike TV (Now Paramount Network), and has since moved to Fox/FS1 and ESPN/ESPN+.

Next stop? Back under the Paramount umbrella, as it was reported earlier this week that, days after the WWE was moving their streaming content from Peacock to ESPN's new streaming service in 2026, TKO Holdings, the parent of both UFC & WWE, decided the two could not remain under the same umbrella for streaming.

Penny wise or pound foolish? Who knows?

While UFC's current frontman, Dana White, is giddy about staging a card at the White House next year, though some of his fighters might not be, you have to wonder why TKO made this move to keep UFC & WWE apart, when the potential for crossovers between the two promotions exists.

The answer there may be that White doesn't want that happening at all. Sure, President Pampers (Donald Trump) is a fan of both, and is in the WWE Hall of Fame's Celebrity Wing, but that doesn't mean he couldn't see a crossover event happening. Given how Trump has meddled in so many things he has no control over lately, just because he 1) thinks he can, and 2) he needs to keep attention away from certain scandals hanging over his head, I'd not be surprised if he took a stand on this issue, inevitably.

In a slightly unrelated note, former UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta has expressed interest in acquiring TNA Wrestling, but there are those who believe that will eventually move under the TKO umbrella as well, given the promotion's current working arrangement with WWE's NXT division, and, almost inevitably, crossovers with the main WWE rosters could still be on the agenda.

Anyone for alphabet soup?

Is nothing sacred? A UFC card at the White House??

President Pampers has really gone off the deep end this time.

He announced Thursday that he'd like to see a UFC card take place at the White House next year, as part of the US' 250th birthday celebration. Now, we all know Trump is one of UFC's biggest, most high-profile fans, and hosted some early events at his now defunct Taj Mahal hotel in the 90's. But, it's not enough anymore for him to have champions of various sports (i.e. MLB, NFL, NBA) at the White House.

He wants Dana White to have a UFC card at the White House.

I think Dana wonders if Trump's actually all there.

Nearly 3 weeks removed from his 79th birthday, and the flop of a parade that came with it, Trump is still looking to destroy traditions for the sake of his own overinflated ego. And to fatten his wallet, because you know White will give him a share of the percentage, assuming this actually takes place.

And, you know, I don't think it does. Someone will convince Trump to move the card from the White House to the Verizon Center, which would make more sense.

Someone have Trump checked for CTE, too, because, in the words of Hank Hill, "that boy ain't right".

At this rate, they'll even let Joe Sixpack throw out the first pitch at a ballgame.

Kidding aside, ESPN bloviator general Stephen A. Smith was given the honor of throwing out the first pitch before Thursday's game vs. Toronto.....

Smith later acknowledged he was not happy with his performance. I'm sure a lot of pro athletes would appreciate that rare moment of clarity from the biggest poser on cable television today. Then again, it wasn't as bad as 50 Cent when he tried the same thing at Citi Field in 2014......

==========================================
In the last few years, Topps, now a part of Fanatics, had lost their licenses to produce NFL, UFC, & WWE cards, with all three signing deals with Panini America.

In the space of the last month, two of the three have announced they are terminating their deals with Panini America.

Last month, it was the NFL Players Association announcing the immediate termination of their licensing deal, which had been in effect since 2015, and would return to Topps/Fanatics.

Earlier this week, WWE, which, coupled with UFC, forms TKO Holdings, a division of Endeavor, announced they were terminating their deal with Panini America as well.

While I am not privy as to why this is happening, Panini does have a bad reputation with collectors for not honoring existing redemptions for premium cards that consumers are entitled to. Given how Panini has driven up the price of cards the last couple of years, forcing Topps/Fanatics to do the same with their baseball product (i.e. jumbo packs are now $8 per pack as opposed to $5 per pack just 3 years ago), that might've eaten away at profit margins for the licensors. I would expect UFC to follow in lockstep with their new step-sister company, and withdraw from Panini not too long from now.
===============================================
WWE also announced that Smackdown will be leaving Fox after the current season, and returning to USA Network, where it aired from 2016-9. Rumors are that Monday Night Raw & NXT would, in turn, leave USA when the current deal expires next year.

Here is an opportunity to have all 3 primetime series on the same channel, at the same airtime on their respective nights, and, so far, either USA or WWE doesn't see the value.

Meanwhile, the Turk came a'callin' on Thursday, as 20 wrestlers across the three brands were cut, including two people in current storylines on NXT.

Dana Brooke had been acting as a mentor to Kelani Jordan, and they were building toward Brooke turning on Jordan in time for a match at next week's No Mercy premium event. Similarly, Mustafa Ali (Adeel Alam) was in line to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the NXT North American title at the same show, and even cut a promo to reference the event on Tuesday. Dragon Lee, who was screwed out of the #1 contender's spot on September 5, now gets a title match, airing on Raw on September 25, which could change the whole scenario in a heartbeat.

The biggest name on the cut list was former grand slam champion Dolph Ziggler (Nick Nemeth), who had been a main roster mainstay for 18 years. The popular belief is that Nemeth will join his brother, Ryan, in AEW, to help add strength to the tag team division.

The cuts were largely in order to balance the books after the merger of WWE and Endeavor, which was 10 days ago, but with rumors of former AEW star Jade Cargill reportedly on her way to WWE, maybe this was also a salary restructuring. We'll wait & see.

Disney pulls its channels off Spectrum Cable. Football fans, in particular, are upset

You're getting ready to watch Florida vs. Utah on ESPN. 8 pm (ET) rolls around, and, suddenly, the screen goes black. Yikes! What just happened?

Negotiations between Disney, which owns ESPN, and Spectrum Cable, stalled at precisely the wrong time for football fans. It's not just ESPN's family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ACC Network, SEC Network, ESPNU), mind, but other Disney-owned channels, such as FX, FXX, Disney Channel, Disney Jr., National Geographic, National Geographic Wild, with four of those acquired from Fox a while back.

Charter Communications, Spectrum's parent company, posted the following message:

Spectrum's argument is that Disney is overcharging for fees. What a surprise, eh? DirecTV bounced local stations WTEN & WXXA earlier this year for the same reason.

It's not just college football fans that are adversely affected. Unless things change quickly, Sunday Night Baseball will be blacked out this weekend. Any forthcoming UFC events airing on ESPN, too, and Monday Night Football returns September 11 with a Bills-Jets game. As of right now, Fox Sports 1 & 2 are not affected----yet. ABC is blacked out in cities where it's on Disney-owned channels, which is not the case in the home district. WTEN's parent also owns the CW.

I think once Disney realizes the timing is way off, they'll settle, and UFC, NCAA, & NFL fans will be happy before long.

Vince McMahon sells WWE to Endeavor Holdings Group. This is why we can't have nice things

During Wrestlemania weekend, WWE Executive Chairman/head nutcase Vince McMahon, sporting the world's weakest mustache, sold the company to Endeavor Holdings Group, the parent company of UFC. McMahon remains Executive Chairman. Ari Emanuel, CEO of Endeavor, will retain that title, which means WWE CEO Nick Khan will once again be President of WWE, opposite UFC President Dana White.

Endeavor released the following on Monday:

There are positives and negatives in this deal.

Positive: This opens up the possibility of crossovers between UFC & WWE. Brock Lesnar has held titles with both promotions, and while he's going to be busy for a bit, I wouldn't rule out his returning to UFC as a commentator or brand ambassador. Bobby Lashley competed for UFC's biggest rival, Bellator. Ronda Rousey, like Lesnar, has championships on her resume with both UFC & WWE, and could open the door on the women's side for best friend and tag team partner Shayna Baszler, as well as Sonya Deville.

Both promotions have television under the Disney umbrella (ESPN revived Ultimate Fighter last year), which makes a crossover even more likely.

Negative: McMahon's wrinkled fingerprints were all over Raw last night and during Sunday's Wrestlemania card. How else to explain Lesnar swerving the audience and turning on Cody Rhodes just as the TV main event was set to start last night? How else to explain Roman Reigns remaining champion via cheating on Sunday? Morale is said to have been down since Sunday.

It's because McMahon, who will be 78 in August, can't leave well enough alone. 8 1/2 months after leaving, and 2 1/2 since returning, he was back in charge of Raw last night, making last minute changes before and during the show.

Ari Emanuel, what were you thinking??

I can answer that myself. McMahon's ego got in the way as usual. Seems that he sold Emanuel a bill of goods, conniving his way back into control because he couldn't stand the prosperity of WWE under his son-in-law, Paul "Triple H" Levesque, who had to answer questions about Reigns' latest tainted title defense following Sunday's card. McMahon was bored being retired. All the progress Levesque has made in the women's division is virtually undone, as Bayley & Asuka, two proud former champions, have both indicated taking time off after losses over the weekend. Bayley was a last minute scratch last night.

For conning Emanuel, and screwing over his audience for the bazillionth time, McMahon gets another set of Weasel ears, something he hasn't gotten in years.

It could be worse. After Power Slap bombed on TBS during the winter, White could land it on USA or ESPN.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is awake and alert, three days after suffering cardiac arrest on the field in Cincinnati during the Bills' game vs. the Bengals.

While Hamlin can't speak due to a breathing tube, he can communicate, and his doctors assured him he'd "won the game of life" when he inquired about Monday's game, which now has been declared no contest, and will not be resumed.

In order to resolve the issue of playoff seedings, if any combination of the Bills, Bengals, and/or Kansas City Chiefs reach the AFC title game on January 29, the game will be played at a neutral site, to make things fair for all parties. And you know NFL suits are praying this will not happen again.
================================================
UFC frontman Dana White had a public spat with his wife in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve, in which they slapped each other. While White says everything's cool, and it's just a case of letting off steam, if you will, the incident has prompted TBS to delay the launch of White's new series, Power Slap, from January 11 to January 18.

There's also talk that the two month series could be scrapped altogether. All White is trying to do is bring a niche regional competition national. There's also calls for White to step down from UFC.

Stay tuned.
=================================================
We should've known retirement just doesn't suit Vince McMahon.

5 1/2 months after retiring from WWE, the 77 year old has bulled his way back in, electing himself and former officers George Berrios & Michele Wilson to the WWE Board of Directors with the express purpose, ostensibly, of facilitating the sale of the company.

Why do that, when WWE has experienced a creative resurgence in McMahon's absence?

For that, we have to ask McMahon this. Jealous much?

Son-in-law Paul Levesque (Triple H) has had a big hand in improving the television ratings, as well as bringing back a number of talents that McMahon cut between 2020-21 under the guise of "budget cuts". Morale is at a level not seen in some time. There are fears that McMahon could undermine everything if he takes too active a role.

On top of that, his former hatchet man, John Laurinaitis, had his first post-WWE booking rescinded Thursday when the organizers of a trade show removed him from the schedule. Laurinaitis, who was let go in August, and is the stepfather of the Bella Twins, was cut loose in connection with the same sexual misconduct case that got McMahon in very hot water.

In other words, five months later, the scandal is still fresh within the industry, and either man is still a risk.

The Yankees are building  a front office braintrust that conceivably could open an avenue by which they can cut loose long time GM Brian Cashman.

Former GM's Brian Sabean (San Francisco) and Omar Minaya (Mets, Montreal, Cleveland) have been hired by the team in recent days, giving Hal Steinbrenner options in case things go south on the Bombers in the coming season. But, you know what they say about too many chefs spoiling the sauce.....!

Dana White has lost his mind.

The UFC boss is launching a new venture next month that already has him getting roasted.

You've heard of slapstick comedy? You've seen wrestlers and MMA fighters slapping each other. Some wise guy on YouTube wanted to give actor-rapper Will Smith credit after the now-infamous slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars earlier this year. Actually, if you want to do that, I'd go all the way back to the Three Stooges and other masters of slapstick comedy.

The Power Slap League is a 2 month competition series set to debut next month on TBS, airing in back of AEW Dynamite on Wednesday nights. Following is a primer on the project.

What White is hoping to do is piggyback on AEW and pick up some of their audience. There are separate division for men & women, weight classes, et al. I don't think so. I think White loses AEW's audience within 10 minutes of the opener.

Just sayin'.

The Minnesota Vikings wrapped up the NFC North earlier today with a bonkers comeback from a 33-0 halftime deficit against visiting Indianapolis. Greg Joseph kicked the game winning field goal on the last play of overtime after the Vikings had come all the way back, and tied the game at 36 at the end of regulation. It goes into the record books as the biggest comeback in league history, and gives Minnesota their first division title in 5 years.

On Smackdown last night, Damage CTRL (represented by IYO SKY & Dakota Kai) defended the women's tag titles vs. Liv Morgan & Tegan Nox. Near the end of the match, a woman in a hoodie attacked Nox, leading to SKY pinning Nox to retain. We'd later learn that China's Xia Li was the attacker, setting up a program with Nox.

What is amusing about all this is that there were some dimbulbs on social media who hoped or thought that former NXT women's champion Mandy Rose, fired two days earlier, made a sudden return, thinking the firing wasn't real. Wrong! Li has been starving for some match action as she's been "left on the bench" the last few months after her initial heel turn, and now has an opportunity. That's all it really is.

We mentioned this over at Tri-City SportsBeat earlier, and it bears repeating here.

Former Siena men's basketball coach Louis Orr passed away earlier this week at 64. Orr, a Syracuse product, played his pro ball with the Knicks, among others, before beginning his coaching career in Loudonville with the Saints before going on to Seton Hall and Bowling Green. More recently, he served as an assistant to former teammate Patrick Ewing, now the head man at Georgetown.

Weasel of The Week: Stephen A. Smith

ESPN bloviator general Stephen A. Smith put his foot in his mouth again.

Appearing on Larry Wilmore's podcast, Smith wandered off the reservation, if you will, during a discussion on women making strides in coaching/management positions in sports.

After discussing the Miami Marlins' hiring a female GM during the offseason, and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon becoming a temporary head coach after her boss, Gregg Popovich, was ejected from a game earlier this season, Smith went off on a tangent tirade about women in UFC. America's Idiot thinks the ladies shouldn't be fighting in the octagon.

Like, hello?

Amanda Nunes landed an endorsement deal with Modelo beer. Ronda Rousey left UFC for the WWE, and is on indefinite hiatus in the hopes of starting a family with husband Travis Browne. Gina Carano is now an actress. Dana White and UFC created opportunities for women, which has led to other career pursuits, same as the men. Smith, as usual, just doesn't get it. He forgets that his network, ESPN, is UFC's current media partner, and UFC just began a series of Fight Night specials on step-sister network ABC.

Now, Smith has had WWE guests on First Take (i.e. The Miz, Triple H), and has played fanboy for them. We'll see how quickly he changes his tune when his broadcast partners, Max Kellerman, who knows more about combat sports than Smith ever will, and Molly Querin-Rose, call him out for his lame, out of touch remarks. ESPN keeps him employed because the controversy he generates brings ratings, but in this case, I'd not be surprised if he suddenly has a target on his back. Smith is best suited to covering basketball, and even there, he usually puts his foot in his mouth.

For his last century remarks about women in the UFC, Smith gets the Weasel ears this week.

Of Recent Vintage: Bully Beatdown (2009)

It was 2009. Mixed martial arts (MMA) was hotter than ever, with a reality competition show, The Ultimate Fighter, airing at the time on Spike TV (now Paramount Network; the series would later move to FS1 to finish its run). Empty-V, which had completely sold out its original mission statement as a music channel after nearly 30 years on the air in favor of spamming house produced reality shows into the ground, and had ended its association with the WWE a few years earlier, two years before Spike did, wanted back in the fight game.

Producer Mark Burnett (Survivor) gave them their ticket back in with the MMA-themed Bully Beatdown, which ran for 3 8-episode seasons (2009-12). The series aired in primetime as well as daytime repeats on weekends. MMA fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller was the series host, and also stepped into the octagon in the season 3 opener. No major names from the MMA world, save maybe for Eddie Alvarez and former NFL player Brian Westbrook, fought for the bullied, usually teens and young adults.

Let's take a look at a sample with Alvarez:

Edit, 3/25/26: Had to change the video. Miller steps into the octagon in the season 3 opener.

Of course, Miller, and likely by extension, Burnett, had to deal with accusations that the show was fake. There are people who wished the series lasted longer than it did, but Empty-V suits were more interested in shows like Jersey Shore and its ilk, which were making them more money.

Rating: A.

To follow up on something we wrote about yesterday, President Trump, while booed at Saturday's UFC event, did have some supporters at the event, as one later headline said he entered to a mixed response.

Trump should be expecting that kind of entrance, though his sons, Dumb Donald II and Sleazy E (Eric), claimed dear old dad was not booed at all, as the idiots are trying to spin the reaction for the benefit of the President's equally brainwashed fan base. You have to remember that while Trump is friends with UFC honcho Dana White, he's also broken bread with fellow geriatric Vince McMahon and the WWE, and is even in their Hall of Fame. This sort of bizarro theatre is up his alley.

Look at it this way, his oldest sons will never make it onto To Tell The Truth......

There's only one undefeated team left in the NFL at the halfway point, and it's not the New England Patriots.

The reigning Super Bowl champs fell to Baltimore, 37-20, Sunday night. Critics have cried foul over the soft first half of the schedule for New England, which can be chalked up to owner Robert Kraft's political influence. However, the road's about to get tougher. New England still has to play Dallas, for example, and has divisional games left with Miami and Buffalo, the latter of whom now sits a game out of first after beating the Washington Trumpets, 24-9. Miami won their first game of the season, but then again, of course it had to be the Jests, who flushed an early 7-0 lead down the tubes against former teammate Ryan Fitzpatrick, as the Dolphins won, 26-18.

That puts the Jests, 0-4 in the division, in the basement of the AFC East. They've already been swept by New England, and also have rematches coming up with Miami and Buffalo next month. However, the Jests also play fellow have-nots Cincinnati and Washington, in addition to Baltimore and the resurgent Steelers & Raiders.

For all the talk about Miami tanking, I don't think they'll get that #1 draft pick after all. It could fall to the Jests.

To the surprise of no one, Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg opted out of his contract so he can chase some extra money.

There wouldn't be opt out clauses in player contracts if it wasn't for Strasburg's pet leech, Scott Boras, who may be angling to move Strasburg closer to home on the left coast.

Meanwhile, another Nationals pitcher, reliever Sean Doolittle, has made it known he will not be with the team for a visit to the White House. Chalk up another player with no desire to break bread with President Trump, just because of the perception of what Trump represents as President.

These are dark times for horse racing, specifically in wildfire-ravaged Southern California.

Santa Anita hosted the Breeders Cup this weekend, and, during the running of the Breeders Cup Classic, Mongolian Groom suffered a leg injury, and had to be put down on the track after the race.

In all, 37 horses have died at Santa Anita, dating back to December 2018, and track officials are still at a loss to figure out how.

Evan Holyfield, son of 80's boxing icon Evander Holyfield, made his debut Saturday night, and scored a 1st round TKO in just 16 seconds.

Shades of Mike Tyson? Maybe, but there are online critics who believe that the referee's decision to stop the fight without a standing 8 count to the opponent suggests a fix was in. There's no way of proving that, really, but I recall no one complaining about Tyson making quick work of his opponents early in his career, usually in the 1st or 2nd rounds.

To update something we wrote about on Friday, it appears the Mets will hold a press conference sometime this week to announce the hiring of former star outfielder Carlos Beltran as their new manager, the first Latino manager in team history. Rumors have former manager Terry Collins possibly returning as Beltran's bench coach, as the two were good friends for a number of years, despite the fact that Beltran was traded halfway through Collins' 1st year as manager in 2011.

President Trump decided to make his primary residence in Palm Beach, Florida, instead of New York. The thin skinned Trump has fallen into severe disfavor with the Big Apple's residents, and evidence of this came when he attended a UFC card in New York Saturday night. Trump was booed, just as he was at the World Series in Washington last weekend. There's also a legal battle over Trump's New York tax returns, which the President has steadfastly, perhaps stubbornly, refused to turn over to the IRS, contrary to other political candidates.

The boos in Washington and New York tell that the average citizen is tired of the relentless rhetoric coming from the White House. I'd imagine it's a matter of time before Trump also wears out his welcome in Florida, too. The only way that changes, friends, is if Trump changes the way he conducts himself.

Congratulations to the Albany Empire upon clinching the Arena Football League's regular season title Saturday night after beating Philadelphia. Due to a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses having been previously booked for Times-Union Center, the first year club's next game may not be until this time next week, with the convention in town this weekend. Have to pray it's not a portent of things to come for the Empire.

Meanwhile, El Cheapo Media apparently couldn't be bothered to send a reporter to the game on Saturday, as a report in today's edition was credited to "sports staff". Ditto for the Tri-City Valleycats' win over Aberdeen, also on Saturday. El Cheapo's parent company is more concerned about its bottom line than properly serving its readers. Small wonder it's the #3 daily in the market.

Even though she's currently in the WWE, Ronda Rousey was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame prior to going on the road with WWE this weekend. The other shoe between the two promotions dropped Saturday night when former UFC and current absentee WWE Universal champion Brock Lesnar showed up at the latest UFC PPV for a confrontation with Daniel Cormier. Reportedly, he's entered the drug testing pool, making him eligible to fight again for UFC in January.

First things first, though, Lesnar, who should've dropped the Universal title long ago, has to decide when his next WWE fight will be, and soon, as fans are getting antsy. The ratings aren't where they should be, due largely to a number of factors, including Lesnar's prolonged absence between matches. This is the result of the contract Vince McMahon negotiated with Lesnar six years ago, allowing Lesnar to pick & choose when he appears. It's not good for business, no matter how WWE tries to spin it.

Of course, people will gripe about certain players being snubbed (i.e. Blake Snell of the Rays, the Mets' Brandon Nimmo). The fact that the Nationals, the host team, only have three players on the roster at the moment, tells you something about the state of fan support in Washington, and the fact that the fans aren't as passionate as you'd think.

Sports this 'n' that

Back in the day, Alcoa Aluminum would sponsor a short highlight reel from the previous week during NFL games under the heading, Fantastic Finishes. Well, there were plenty of those on Sunday. Consider:

*--Cincinnati escaped the Meadowlands with a 23-22 win over the Jets after Ryan Fitzpatrick was intercepted with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter. This came after ex-Jet Mike Nugent booted the game winning field goal.

*--After choking away a half dozen games last year late, the Giants finally got one back, beating Dallas, 28-27. Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams, who should've known better, failed to go out of bounds on what was the last play of the game, spoiling the debuts of rookies Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott.

*--Kansas City rallied from a 3 touchdown deficit to first force overtime, then defeat San Diego, 33-27. The Chiefs are in a 3-way knot atop the AFC West with Denver and Oakland, the latter of whom escaped New Orleans with a late comeback win.

*--New England, a road underdog, fended off Arizona, making Jimmy Garappolo a winner in his first start. As it was, the Patriots were the only AFC East team to win a game, as Miami, Buffalo, and the Jets all fell. The Dolphins also let a 4th quarter lead slip away, losing to Seattle. If you took the points with the Dolphins, though, you cashed in, as Miami was a double-digit underdog on the road.

It should also be pointed out that in the AFC South, Houston was the only winner, as Indianapolis fell to Detroit, 39-35, thanks to 1) a Matt Prater field goal with under a minute to play, and, 2) a safety in the end zone on the game's final play, as the Colts botched an attempt to lateral the ball down the field on the final kickoff. It looked more like they were trying the Harlem Globetrotters' weave play (if you've ever seen the 'Trotters, you know what I mean), and it was an epic fail!

High schools: Four years removed from a Big 10 and Section II championship, Troy High's boys varsity soccer team can't buy a win, much less a goal. The Flying Horses are 0-4 after dropping a 4-0 verdict to Ballston Spa on Saturday afternoon in front of a sparse crowd at Picken Memorial Field.

I could see why they're losing. They're not aggressive enough on defense, leaving too much room for their opponents. Troy has scored just 1 goal in 4 games, mired in the basement of the Suburban Council's Grey division.

The women's varsity team isn't much better. They're also 0-4, and have been outscored 11-3 in their last two losses (Ballston Spa & Mohonasen). Ouch!

I mentioned before the lack of crowd support at Troy on Saturday. A security guard told me that for weeknight home games, students usually stick around after school, but with other options on Saturdays, well....!

Personal note: When I was a student at Troy High (1979-81), the fortunes of the men's soccer team and the football team were the opposite of today's teams. I've often told the story about how the football team couldn't execute a simulated goal line offensive play at a pep rally, of all things, while the soccer team was among the contenders for the Big 10 title. It's funny how times change.

The soccer teams aren't alone in their futility at present. The boys' golf team has won just 1 match that I know of, as results aren't always reported to the papers. The women's volleyball is 3-1 after beating Mohonasen on Thursday night in straight sets. Again, not all the results are reported to the papers. Troy's cross country & swimming teams are also starving for print space.

Meanwhile, Troy's football team, currently 2-0, has something in terms of incentive as it relates to the Class AA Super Bowl. The game will be played on November 3, a Thursday night, at RPI's East Campus Village Stadium, situated behind the Houston Field House, both just a short distance from the Dudley Van Arnam campus that is home to THS and the neighboring Troy Middle School. If Troy makes it to the Super Bowl this year, it's virtually a de facto home game.

Colleges: After reading of the controversy surrounding the end of Saturday's Central Michigan-Oklahoma State game, I cannot help but think that, in the interest of fairness to both schools and their respective leagues (Mid America and Big 12), maybe the referee's decision to end the game after a clear botch shouldn't be the last one. In case you hadn't heard, after a penalty on Oklahoma State, Central Michigan was granted an untimed down, and scored the game winning touchdown. Too often in recent years, game officials have made inexcusable gaffes that have irretrievably altered the course of games. Now, I know the game's not supposed to end on a defensive penalty, so where the problem was is simply poor clock management on the part of game officials. All they needed to do was look at video, figure out how much time was left, and put the time back on the clock. Then, there's no untimed down.

UFC: So CM Punk (Phil Brooks) lost his first MMA fight Saturday night, a submission loss to Mickey Gall in 2:00 of the first round. He says he'll keep on fighting, but UFC chief Dana White thinks Punk should take a step down before he tries to get back into the biggest MMA stage.

Bobby Lashley could probably relate to that. The current TNA champion fought in a smaller MMA promotion before signing with Bellator, and of course there are rumors flying that if Punk wants to return to wrestling, a 2nd tour of duty with TNA would be in the cards (Punk was in TNA in 2003), especially for a big money match with Lashley. Otherwise, Punk would have his developing career as a comic book writer to fall back on, though Marvel just cancelled Drax.
============================
WWE: Speaking of guys who used to be in TNA, former NWA, TNA, & IWGP champ AJ Styles added the WWE World title to his resume on Sunday night, but needed a low blow, after the ref was knocked down, to unseat Dean Ambrose at Backlash. At least Styles succeeded on his own. The same cannot be said for grappler-actor Michael "The Miz" Mizanin, who needed illegal help from his wife, Maryse, to keep the Intercontinental title away from Dolph Ziggler. All that does is continue the narrative established a couple of weeks earlier that Miz has become a coward in the eyes of retired former champion Daniel Bryan, now the GM of Smackdown. 3rd party interference certainly would reinforce that notion, and it reduces Miz's credibility as champion to an all-time low. By the way, I wouldn't call myself an A-lister when all of Miz's movies either go direct-to-video or are made for cable. His 12 year association with WWE has netted endorsement deals with KFC (shared with Ziggler, as we've previously seen) and Domino's, the latter in his current role as the smug, self-overrated actor. Unfortunately, the act is bordering on stale.
============================
Baseball: We're used to the idea that every even numbered year results in the San Francisco Giants winning the World Series. It happened in 2010, 2012, & 2014. However, the Giants are clinging to a wild card at present, with the Mets, Cardinals, and Pirates leading a pack of challengers as we're in the season's final three weeks. It's looking more and more like the Cubs will be the #1 seed in the NL, and Washington would have to avoid another collapse, with the Mets hot on their heels, to perhaps be the #2 seed. Don't look now, but despite losing to Tampa Bay on Sunday, the Yankees are still in position to slip in the back door for a wild card berth of their own. And we all wrote them off just a few weeks ago.........!

They are laying Muhammad Ali to rest today, one week after he passed away at 74 after a 30+ year bout with Parkinson's Disease. One ill-informed fellow on a message board I frequent mistakenly assumed Ali had Alzheimer's. Big difference. A memorial service was held Thursday in Ali's hometown of Louisville, and the funeral procession seemed as if Ali was a head of state, not a retired boxing champion.

On Wednesday, the El Rey Network, home of Thursday night kung fu theatre marathons and Lucha Underground, followed the latter with a marathon of Ali's short-lived foray into children's television, 1977's I Am The Greatest: The Adventures of Muhammad Ali, which lasted half a season on NBC. I would have expected El Rey to pull up anything else, like, for example, Freedom Road, but nope.

Could Brock Lesnar be the man that unites WWE & UFC?

Lesnar, a former champion of both promotions, had to get clearance from WWE to appear at the 200th UFC PPV event, set for next month. He'll then return to WWE for Summerslam, scheduled for mid-August in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. Talk is that one of UFC's female fighters, such as Paige Van Zant, and not Ronda Rousey, will cross over in exchange. Rousey, you'll recall, appeared at Wrestlemania in 2015. I shan't be surprised if UFC frontman Dana White exchanges other ideas with WWE's resident lunatic-in-charge, Vince McMahon, ere long.

By now, you know that Shenendehowa pitcher Ian Anderson was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the 3rd pick in the MLB Entry Draft on Thursday night, and will by-pass his intention of pitching in college for Vanderbilt. It's too bad Atlanta doesn't have a team in the NY-Penn League, which begins its 2016 season next week. The Plainsmen will play in the Class AA Final Four on Saturday at Binghamton, and it would be fitting if Anderson ended his high school career with a state title on his resume.

In the wake of the fight earlier this week that broke out between Kansas City's Yordano Ventura and Baltimore slugger Manny Machado, both players decided to appeal their suspensions. Ventura, because he's had past issues, was hit with a 9 game ban, but Machado got fewer games. I say, screw the appeal, take the punishment, and move on. Why bother appealing at all?
======================================
I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the passing of internet icon Kevin Ferguson, aka Kimbo Slice, who passed away earlier this week at 42 after heart failure. Ferguson went from having his street fights go viral on YouTube and other sites to landing a deal with first EliteXC, where current WWE trainer Seth Petruzelli shattered Slice's aura of invincibility on national television, and then later with UFC. Slice also appeared in "The Scoripion King 3", which went direct-to-video, and was his last film role.

Finally, hockey icon Gordie Howe has passed away. Howe, you might remember, had retired in the 70's, but then jumped to the then-upstart World Hockey Association (WHA) to play with his sons, Mark & Marty, for Houston. The league folded, and Howe would return to the NHL before retiring for good.

Rast in peace, gentlemen.

Senator John McCain once referred to mixed martial arts (MMA) as "human cockfighting". The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) has since made a lot of changes, evolving as it has over 23 years. And, now, it's on its way to New York at last, pending the signature of governor Andrew Cuomo to legalize MMA in the Empire State. "Amateur" competitions have been taking place for the last few years, but, very soon, the big boys will finally be coming, and the UFC, under the direction of Dana White, have a event scheduled later this year---in pencil, mind you, pending the governor---at Madison Square Garden. Albany's Times Union Center is a likely landing spot down the road, but you have to worry, if you're Joe Average Consumer, about ticket prices and how they'll be at a level more compatible with boxing than pro wrestling.

That allows us a segue to the next item. Dynasty Pro Wrestling's 1st event of 2016 was originally booked for the Troy Boys & Girls Club for tonight. However, and you can chalk this up to the homecoming for Ring of Honor star Dalton Castle if you like, ticket sales have spiked to the point where the Troy B & G Club can't hold the show, so they're moving across the river to the Albany B & G Club on Delaware Avenue. Show time is the same, 7 pm. Castle's last appearance for Dynasty was 14 months ago, on the undercard to a show headlined by 90's hardcore icon Tommy Dreamer. If you've seen him on ROH since then, you know what to expect.

Dallas Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones gets a Dunce Cap and a set of Weasel ears this week. Why? Because he's out of touch with reality. That's what he gets, really, for inviting Vince McMahon into his luxury box at AT&T Stadium at the end of last season, communing with a guy who's just as mentally challenged as he is. AT&T Stadium hosts Wrestlemania 32 next week, oh, by the way. Anyway, Jones went on record deriding reports confirming the connection between football and CTE, a disease caused by repeated blows to the head over a lengthy period of time. Like, in the 27 seasons he's overseen the Cowboys, you'd believe he has had a few players, including QB-turned-Fox broadcaster Troy Aikman, suffer concussions on the field. In fact, it was the concussions that convinced Aikman to swap his shoulder pads for a Fox blazer. Fox studio co-host Terry Bradshaw has owned up to having had concussions during his playing career in Pittsburgh, and I'd imagine his colleagues, Howie Long (Raiders) & Michael Strahan (Giants), have probably dealt with the same as well.

For Jones, this is a case where he's proving to the entire world once again how clueless he really is about the darker side of the game. He's turned the Cowboys into Raiders South by picking up troubled players, such as Greg Hardy, in recent years, in an effort to win another Super Bowl. All teams have the revolving doors, shuffling players on and off the roster, but Jones is just too stupid to realize he cannot run the team by himself anymore. It's not the same as being an oil magnate, which is where he made his fortune before buying the team in 1989. It's past time Jones hired some actual football-savvy people to run the team, before he puts his foot in his mouth again!

Dunce Cap Award: Mike Goldberg

In 2008, Vince McMahon made one of his biggest blunders by hiring former NFL & American Gladiators announcer Mike Adamle as a WWE announcer. Adamle was not prepared, and it showed. After Adamle was moved out of the broadcast booth and into the GM's office on Monday Night Raw, it was hoped that he could be better served in smaller doses, but Adamle couldn't handle the pressure, and resigned that fall.

McMahon had long considered UFC announcer Mike Goldberg, but never took a chance on him. Fox, which has TV rights to UFC these days, thought it'd be a clever cross-promotional ploy to put Goldberg in an NFL booth last Sunday. Sadly, he came off looking as bad as Adamle did in WWE. He had players mixed up, and all kinds of other flubs. Chalk it up to nervousness if you like, but let's face it. He was a fish out of water.

To make matters worse, Goldberg didn't take too well to criticism on social media. Instead of giving him the Weasel ears, we'll just give Goldberg the Dunce Cap this week, for his lack of preparation for NFL duty, which lasted 1 week. The Fox suits learned a painful lesson from this, hopefully never to be duplicated. Then again, Adamle, now a sports anchor in Chicago, is available........

Jeff Blatnick (1957-2012)

Long before Kurt Angle won his Olympic gold medals and starting pimping them in the WWE & TNA, there was another American Olympic hero in Greco Roman wrestling.

Jeff Blatnick won titles at the regional & national level in the late 70's and was on the 1980 team that boycotted the Moscow Olympics. Recovering from Hodgkins' lymphoma, Blatnick won the gold in Los Angeles in 1984, but unlike Angle, who would follow Blatnick's footsteps to gold 12 years later in Atlanta, Blatnick opted against turning pro. He wasn't that fond of pro wrestling, anyway, even though he did make some appearances on AWA programming for ESPN.

When the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) launched in the 90's, Blatnick was on board as a color analyst, and why UFC ever let him walk away, I'll never know. Blatnick helped develop the rules that are in place, based on the regulations set forth in New Jersey.

In recent years, Blatnick returned to upstate New York, working as a varsity wrestling coach at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. On Wednesday, Blatnick passed away at 55 from complications from heart disease.

Angle has bragged about wrestling with a broken neck in Atlanta in 1996. Small potatoes, compared to what Blatnick went through en route to the gold. The fact that Blatnick had beaten lymphoma on his way to the gold medal made him a bigger hero, bigger still for not compromising his own values and submitting to the lure of big bucks and a national spotlight. Today, Angle is a shell of his former self, coasting on past successes in TNA. Blatnick will be remembered as a hero, in more ways than one, and that's the way it should be.

Rest in peace, Jeff.
